About the OrgCatalog project and methodology

OrgCatalog is a catalogue of Tashkent organizations, prices and objects built from photos taken on the spot. This article describes where the data comes from, how it is checked and what to expect from it.

What the catalogue contains

The catalogue now has 9395 photos and 1312 organizations, photos since 2017. Sections:

Every object is a photo with a description, labels (the kind of product, object or service) and a point on the map. For goods, the price, brand, packaging size and country are added if they are visible on the price tag or the packaging.

Photos, date and place of shooting

All photos were taken on the spot — in a shop, at a bazaar, in the street. The date and time of a photo are taken from the photo's own data (EXIF), and if there are none, from the file name or the file date. The coordinates come from the phone's GPS at the moment of shooting.

GPS indoors and between tall buildings can be inaccurate. If a point has clearly drifted, the coordinates are corrected by hand according to the known place of shooting. Photos without coordinates are in the lists but not on the map.

The site publishes reduced copies of photos (up to 800 pixels) without the camera's service data. What is not published at all is described in the article «Privacy».

Organizations

Shops, pharmacies, bazaars, sellers at bazaars and services are collected on the organization pages: address, landmark, phones, websites, opening hours, a map point and all photos and prices of this place. Organization texts are translated into Russian, English and Uzbek (Cyrillic and Latin) — the language is chosen with the switch.

Branches of one retail chain are grouped on the chain pages: there you can see the prices of one product in all branches. A seller inside a bazaar or shopping centre links to the “parent” place.

Prices: price tags, shop windows and records without a photo

A price gets into the catalogue in three ways:

From the price and the packaging size the site itself calculates the price per kilogram, litre, piece, capsule or serving, so that packages of different sizes can be compared. In detail — in the article «How to read prices».

How photos are labelled

Every photo is labelled by hand: what is in it (the kind of product, tree, camera or service), the name and brand of the product, the price and unit, packaging size, country, barcode and article number, if they can be read. Barcodes and QR codes on the original photos are additionally checked by a scanner program so that there are no mistakes in the digits.

The same product is written differently in different shops (“Сваля” and Svalya, “still water” and “no gas”). Such spellings are reduced to one so that the product's price history is on one page.

Updates

The catalogue grows as photos are taken: new photos, organizations and prices appear in the section “What's new” (by day, together with new goods, brands, price changes and promotions; all photos by month — the “Photos” section, every photo has its own page) and in the Telegram channel @orgcatalog. Old photos added later take their place in the feed on the date of shooting, not the date of publication; an organization — on the date of its first photo, a product and a brand — on the date of the first price.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official site of the shops?

No. OrgCatalog is an independent project: organizations do not pay for being listed and do not send price lists. The data is collected from photos of price tags and shop windows and from price records without a photo.

How up to date are the prices?

Every price has a date: it is the date of the price-tag photo or of the record without a photo. The price in the shop may have changed since then, so go by the date. Prices older than a year go to the archive by year. How to read prices

How can an organization get into the catalogue?

Write to the project author: the name, the address or landmark, phones and opening hours. You can attach photos of the signboard and price tags. Contacts
