Remove EXIF online: delete the geotag and metadata from photos

Remove the geolocation from a photo — the coordinates of where it was taken — or all metadata: the date, the phone model, the software. Before sending or publishing, without losing quality; photos are cleaned right in your browser and are not uploaded anywhere.

What to remove

How to remove EXIF from a photo

  1. Choose a mode. “All metadata” removes the date, camera, coordinates and other tags; “Geotag only” — just the coordinates, the date and camera are kept.
  2. Choose a photo. Click “Choose photos” or drag files into the frame — cleaning starts immediately, and the files are not uploaded anywhere.
  3. Download the result. Download the cleaned photo or all of them at once as a ZIP archive; on a phone the “Share” button will send them to a messenger. The table shows what was removed and that there is no GPS any more.

Why photo metadata is dangerous

A phone records more than the image in every shot. From the metadata of a photo that is posted whole or sent as a file you can find out:

Messengers and social networks remove EXIF from photos sent as an image, but a photo sent “as a file”, by e-mail, through the cloud or posted on a website goes out with all its metadata. You can check a particular photo in the EXIF viewer.

Remove only the geolocation or all metadata

All metadata — for publishing, when nothing about the shot should remain: EXIF (date, camera, lens, shooting settings, software), GPS, XMP, IPTC, comments, the thumbnail and additional images inside the file are removed. Only the Orientation rotation tag — otherwise a vertical photo would open sideways — and the ICC colour profile remain.

Geotag only — when the date and camera are needed (for an archive, a photo bank, a competition) but the location is not: the geodata — coordinates, altitude, direction and GPS time — is zeroed, XMP is deleted entirely, and the other tags are left alone.

No loss of quality

JPEG, PNG and WebP are not recompressed: only the metadata blocks are cut out of the file, and the pixels are copied byte for byte — the size decreases by the amount of metadata, and the image stays the same. Formats that cannot be cleaned this way (HEIC from iPhone, AVIF, TIFF) are redrawn by the page into JPEG at 92% quality (HEIC with its own decoder, in any browser) — the table says “recompressed to JPEG” for such a file.

This page also works in a phone browser: choose the photo through “Files”, clean it and tap “Share” — it will go to Telegram or WhatsApp already without metadata. Built-in methods:

How to check the result

For every photo the table shows what was removed and whether any coordinates remain: the page re-reads the cleaned file. All the remaining tags can be seen by opening the file in the EXIF viewer: the capture date, camera and export to Excel are there too.

Photos stay on your device

Files are read and cleaned in the browser and are not sent to the server; the result is hidden from Webvisor recording. More details in the privacy help article.

Frequently asked questions

How to remove EXIF from a photo online?

Choose the “All metadata” mode, then a photo on this page and click “Download”. The photo is cleaned in the browser: the metadata is cut out of the file, and the image itself is not recompressed.

How to remove the geotag from a photo but keep the date?

Choose the “Geotag only” mode: the GPS coordinates are zeroed, while the capture date, camera and shooting settings are kept. XMP is deleted entirely — it can contain coordinates too.

How to remove the geolocation from a photo?

Choose the “Geotag only” mode and a photo: the GPS coordinates (geodata, location) will be zeroed, and the date and camera will remain. On iPhone you can avoid sending the location — turn off “Location” in the “Options” of the “Share” sheet; on Android — turn off location tags in the camera settings.

Is it dangerous to post photos with geolocation?

Yes, if the photo was taken at home, near a school or at work: the coordinates in EXIF show where it was taken to within a few metres, and the dates show when you are there. Social networks usually remove EXIF, but photos sent as a file, by e-mail or posted on a website keep it in full.

How to remove photo metadata in Windows?

Right-click the file → “Properties” → “Details” → “Remove Properties and Personal Information” → “Create a copy with all possible properties removed”. Windows does not remove everything — it is more reliable to clean the photo on this page in the “All metadata” mode.

How to remove the geolocation from a photo on a Mac?

Open the photo in “Preview” → “Tools” → “Show Inspector” → the “i” tab → GPS → the button to remove the location. Or choose the photo on this page in Safari — the cleaning works the same way as on Windows.

Will the photo quality get worse?

No, for JPEG, PNG and WebP: only the metadata blocks are removed, and the image pixels are copied unchanged. Other formats (HEIC from iPhone, AVIF, TIFF) are redrawn into JPEG at high quality — this is noted in the table.

Why didn’t the photo turn sideways after removing EXIF?

A phone often stores the shot “lying down” and writes the rotation to the Orientation tag. The page keeps this tag, so the photo opens the same way as before. The colour profile is kept too.

Are photos uploaded to the server?

No. The files are read and cleaned in your browser and are not sent to the server. The result is not recorded in the visit statistics.

Can EXIF be removed from an iPhone photo (HEIC)?

Yes. In Safari on iPhone, when you choose a photo from the gallery, the iPhone usually passes the site a copy in JPEG — it is cleaned without loss of quality. A HEIC file copied to a computer or Android is opened by the page with its own decoder (loaded only for HEIC) and saved as a high-quality JPEG without metadata.

How to check that the metadata is gone?

The results table shows for each file what was removed and whether there is still GPS. For a full check, open the cleaned file on the “View EXIF” page.

Do messengers and social networks remove EXIF?

Telegram, WhatsApp, VKontakte, Instagram and Facebook remove EXIF from photos sent as an image. A photo sent “as a file” or by e-mail goes out with its metadata — it is worth cleaning it in advance.

The page did not clean the photo — what should I do?

Write to the project author saying what the file is and from which device: the format will be added if it can be processed in a browser. Contacts
